Tidbit: Guiness World Record in the Nilgiris

An attempt on the Guinness record for 'Most Number of trees planted in a single day' was made in the Nilgiris District by The District Administration and the people at Kuruthukkuli village , near Ooty on 23.06.2002 with 300 volunteers planted 42,184 saplings in an area of 70 acres. Madras Regimental Centre (MRC ) and Special Task Force (STF ) jawans, the volunteers from nearby villages and tribals were part of the volunteers with the Co-ordination of Forest and Horticulture Department. They braved the continuous rain, chill and wet weather to accomplish the task within 24 hours. The attempt has been duly recognized by the THE GUINNESS RECORDS and so the Nilgiris has found a place in the the GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS. The place on which the record was attempted will be called THE NILGIRIS GUINNESS PARK . The previous record was set on May 18, 1999 when 34,083 saplings were planted at the Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area at Alberta, Canada
